Marks and Symbols

Marks are graphics used to represent companies, agencies, institution and other businesses. that consist of symbols, pictographs, lettermarks, logos combination marks and trademarks. Symbols specifically use different methods to appeal to audiences, including positive association, easy identification, simple colors and an emphasis on negative space. While used by companies for the same purpose, symbols and logos aren’t the same. A symbol is a graphic made without the use of fonts, while a logo is made of one or more words. When both words and graphics are used they’re called combination marks or signatures.

The most important key facts I learned about marks and symbols were that symbols shouldn’t be too abstract because they make the meaning of the symbol confusing to audiences, The size of a symbol should be measured in a ½” diameter and should be tested to make sure the symbol doesn't become distorted when made smaller, and  trademarks are a combination of all forms of marks including symbols, pictographs, lettermarks, logos, and combination marks. My favorite thing I learned was that white space can and should go through a symbol rather than around it. It's important to know this for the future because an audience's eyes will be draw to the symbol because of the use of white space. There was a lot I didn't know about symbols in general, such as the direction of a symbol can be used to indicate positive or negative feelings in an audience or how negative space should be used when making symbols.
